Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships are Government funded and supported training programmes for each occupation area for employed learners aged 16 to 24 years old.

What commitment is involved?
The focus is on supporting the individual so in addition to employing them, each business must be prepared to support training visits and periods of day release training. The support required is agreed individually to take into account the needs of the learner and the business situation.

What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a formal qualification based around the relevant National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) for each sector. Learners also complete a Technical Certificate which is an externally tested award focusing on the knowledge individuals need to work in their chosen industry. There is also the requirement to develop individuals key skills in literacy (Communication) and numeracy (Application of Number). In addition each Apprentice will also complete a workbook on their employee’s rights and responsibilities to help them become a more valuable employee.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?
On average an Apprenticeship at NVQ 2 will take 1 year and an Advanced Apprenticeship at NVQ 3 will take 2 years but each programme is planned individually to reflect the needs and abilities of the learner and their employee.

What will it cost?
All Apprentices must be employed and earning at least £80 per week (at the start of programme – there are also legal implications for the minimum wage which staff can advise you on). Different programmes may have some financial contributions but this is always discussed up front – there are never any hidden costs.
The main financial implication is time.
